Direct and Indirect Restorations
There are two types of dental restorations:
- Direct restorations - Involves placing a filling into a prepared tooth cavity
- Indirect restorations - Involves customized tooth replacements such as crowns, veneers, inlays, bridges, implants, or inlays.
Four different materials are used to restore teeth: gold, porcelain, dental amalgam, and composite resin.
Restorative Dental Procedures
- Crowns - Dental crowns are cemented onto damaged, chipped, or cracked teeth.
- Bridges - Dental bridges are prosthetic devices that are anchored to adjacent teeth to replace one or more missing teeth.
- Aesthetic fillings - Fillings use composites of a hard plastic that fuses to the tooth to hold it together.
- Air abrasion - Abrasion technology uses a fine powder of aluminum oxide under air pressure that blasts out small cavities in teeth without the need for anesthetic or needles.
- Cosmetic dentures - Dentures can replace many missing teeth or completely missing teeth.
- Veneers - Veneers are a layer of composite or porcelain material that is bonded to the surface of one or more chipped, cracked, or uneven teeth.
- Partials - Removable partials are a device of artificial teeth supported on a framework and attached to your natural teeth with retainers.
- Implants - Implants are where a titanium screw is placed in the jawbone and a crown is connected to the implant to replace a missing tooth.
- Inlay - Inlays are a cemented restoration of gold, porcelain, or other ceramic material to restore the surface of a tooth.
- Inlay - Made from gold, porcelain, or another ceramic material, an inlay restores the chewing surface and the sides of posterior teeth.
- Bonding - Composite bonding helps to reshape the front central teeth.
